A Report On Romeo Juliet English Language Essay What methods does Shakespeare use to show the characters feelings and thoughts in Act 3, Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet? Explain the scenes importance and consider how different audiences might respond. Shakespeare wrote the play, ‘Romeo Juliet more than 500 years ago and he used many techniques to make it interesting. Using techniques in a play is really important because it makes the play effective and also makes the reader understand the play better. Shakespeare uses a variety of techniques to show the characters feelings in Act 3, Scene 5 of ‘Romeo Juliet. For example, Shakespeare uses insults, antitheses, list, ambiguous statements and many more. In Act 3, Scene 5, Lord Capulet wants Juliet to marry Paris as he is lovely and honourable person. Previously, he was extremely happy as his only daughter is going to get married. But when she says, ‘No then the mood of Lord Capulets changes drastically, therefore his mood goes from happy to angry, soft to harsh and weak to strong. Furthermore, Shakespeare uses many techniques to express Lord Capulets anger with Juliet. One of the techniques that Lord Capulet says to Juliet is insults. This is when in Act 3, Scene 5 he says, â€Å"Out, you green-sickness carrion! Out, you baggage! You tallow-face! † By saying this he implies that Juliet is a burden and a disease to him. Here Lord Capulet is being extremely rude by humiliating his only own daughter like this. Lord Capulets daughter, Juliet, is the most important character in this scene as it is primarily based on her. Shakespeare shows Juliets emotions by using statements with double meaning (ambiguous statements). For example, when Juliet says, â€Å"Delay this marriage for a month, a week,† Lady Capulet thinks that she is too young and needs some time. But what she actually means is that she needs some time to think about what she is going to do, to be able to be with Romeo. Juliets mum, Lady Capulet is antagonised by Juliets reply because she said â€Å"No† which was reply that nobody has imagined. This is clear when Juliet asks Lady Capulet for help but she replies, â€Å"Talk to me not for Ill not speak a word†. This is just like saying, â€Å"Talk to my hand, not to my face†. This clearly shows how rude, arrogant and abusive Lady Capulet is. The Nurse, on the other hand, is really worried about Juliet because she is already married and her parents are forcing her to marry Paris. When the Nurse says, â€Å"I think it best you married the county. O, Hes a lovely gentleman!†, she uses vocative because she is really apprehensive about Juliet getting married to Paris, as she is already married to Romeo. In this text an exclamation mark is used and punctuation is really important when writing a play as the reader can know how characters can say their dialogues. For example, â€Å"Hang thee, young baggage! disobedient wretch!† Here Shakespeare uses a comma, to show there is a pause in the dialogue. Also, he uses exclamation marks, which tells the reader that Lord Capulet says the dialogue in a harsh way. Moreover, it also depends on the audience how they will interpret and react to the dialogue. For example, when Lord Capulet say â€Å"hang, thee, beg, starve, die in the streets.† There is a techniques used her which is list. Also, if there were modern audiences then they would interpret this as Lord Capulet being very harsh on his daughter but on the other hand the Shakespeare audiences will interpret as Lord Capulet doing the right thing and considering that Juliet is the one who is wrong because in those times there were more arrange marriages than love marriages. Lord Capulet also tries to gather sympathy from the modern and Shakespeare audiences. For example, when Capulet says, â€Å"Day, night, hour, tide, time, work, play, alone, in company.† He is saying that he has looked after and cared for Juliet for every bit of his life. Also, this text from the play is a technique, which is called list. Capulet says this so he can gather sympathy from the audiences. He will get sympathy from the Shakespeare audience because in Shakespearean time the father chooses the groom for the bride. On the other hand, the modern audience will sympathise with Juliet because they think that a women have the right to choose her groom. After all she is the one who is going to be married and spend her life with her husband. In conclusion, using techniques in a play is really important for a play, as it gives the play a new layout. Also, Shakespeare puts the characters thoughts and feelings in their speech. He builds up dramatic tension between characters which conveys their emotions and therefore portrays their relationship.

Philosophy has many questions- Asking the right questions†¦ From Greek word PHILO (Love) & SOPHIA (Wisdom) which means lover of wisdom * PHYTAGORAS, a Greek Philosopher, was the first to use the term Philosophy. * He noted that there are three types of man: a. lover of pleasure b. lover of success c. lover of wisdom * the last, according to him, is the SUPERIOR TYPE. * Wisdom here deals with the principles of things, the first cause of all beings.It deals with an understanding on the meaning of one’s existence and the importance of things around her/ him (Socio, 2007) The chief goal of wisdom is a fundamental understanding of reality as it relates to living a good life. * We might say then, that wisdom is good judgement about complex situations. Consequently, wisdom involves reflection, insight, a capacity to learn from experience and some plausible conception of the human condition (Buenaflor, 2009). The term was coined by Zeno the Stoic. St. Thomas Aquinas defines Logic as the art that directs the reasoning process so that man may attain knowledge of truth in an orderly way, with ease and without error.As art, Logic is the tool of all sciences. The Scholastics considered it as â€Å"the art of all other arts† because it is used in every science and in every practical endeavor. As science, Logic studies the logical properties involved in the act of knowledge such as the logic of notions or concepts, the logic of judgement, the logic of reasoning and the logic of science. As science, Logic is a systematized body of logical truths and principles governing the habit of critical thinking and reasoning. History of Logic Zeno the Stoic coined the actual name Logic.He established the rules of argumentation to clarify the nature of c oncepts by using the Prior and Posterior analytics of Aristotle’s logical works. This endeavor degenerated because of the clever rhetoric and subtle persuasion of the Sophists. Socrates refuted the error by vindicating the value concepts in knowing reality. Plato, the most distinguished student of Socrates, philosophized that truth is the same as the ultimate, ideal reality. Aristotle corrected this error. He wrote six treatises on Logic known as the â€Å"Organon† He stated that ideas are mental operations that exist only in the mind.He is considered as the founder of science. Porphyrius wrote the categories of Aristotle known as â€Å"Isagoge’ Boethius translated Aristotle’s Organon and wrote commentaries on the Isagoge. Avicenna and Averroes wrote commentaries of Aristotle’s Organon Thomas Aquinas wrote commentaries on the logical works of Aristotle Francis Bacon wrote the â€Å"Novum Organon†. He introduced the Theory of Induction. John Stuart Mill developed Bacon’s â€Å"Novum Organon† Recently, George Boole founded the New Symbolic Logic . Because of its limited scope of application its popularity declined. Methods of Reasoning Inductive method- where we can obtain universal knowledge by considering the particular ex. Repeated experience of seeing falling bodies towards the ground. We may induce that this is common to all bodies. * Deductive- When we proceed from universal knowledge to particular cases ex. Logic is divided according to the three acts of the mind. * Apprehension * Judgement * Reasoning Simple Apprehension It is the basic operation of the mind or â€Å"the mental processes by which we grasp the general meaning of the thing without affirming or denying anything about it. It is the basic operation of the mind that leads to a concept; ex. man† â€Å"dog† Judgment It is the act of the mind by which we compare two concepts, either they agree or not. If we put concepts togeth er, the end result is called judgement or proposition. Ex. Man Laughs Reasoning It is the act of the mind by which we derive new truths from previously assumed truth. The mind combines several judgments or propositions in order to arrive at a previously unknown judgment; it is called syllogism. Ex. All men are walking Cyrus is a man. Therefore Cyrus is walking. Between these ideas, there is a third (middle) ground. Man-made Climate Change Essay

Did People Cause Global Climate Change? The debate on global warming and global climate change has been going on for several decades. One group is of the opinion that man in the name of technological progress has actually caused damage to the environment and was the reason of the global climate change. The other group believes that global change is a phenomenon that has been in progress for thousands of years and that it is nothing new to worry about. There have been heated arguments and discussions on both camps, but neither is willing to back down or come to a resolution. Even the various theories proposed by scientists on what might happen in the future based on past data seem to be contradictory. Some theorize that global warming might lead to melting snow caps, which will result in sea levels rise in all the oceans. Others theorize that global warming can trigger another ice age. Still, people say that these things are part of a repetitive cycle and that past data shows rises and drops in global temperature over thousands of years. There are others who even go to the extent of saying that global warming is nothing but a scam. They say that global warming proponents can earn a lot of money through several methods by playing on people’s fears. Overseas, you can see the juxtaposition of American pop culture on the older modes of Asian thought and society. One of the worst things you can do when writing essays is to plagiarise, that is, to pass off someone else’s work as your own. But there are many forms of plagiarism, and you have to be aware of all of them to be confident you are handing in work which really is your own. In this guide we look at what plagiarism is, how to avoid it, and how referencing plays a part. Your university or college will have access to top-end plagiarism checking software, so don’t even think you’ll get away with it! Here are some common forms to be aware of: Quoting direct from other people’s work without making it obvious that they are not your own words (by using quotation marks). You also need to identify who actually said this, using the author’s name, year and page number. Close paraphrasing of another person’s work by changing very little or changing the order slightly. It is also plagiarism if you slavishly follow the structure of someone else’s argument, even if you use your own words. Even if you acknowledge your source, you are still plagiarising. The above also applies to internet sources. Just because you found something online doesn’t mean you can use it freely and pass it off as your own. Be aware that internet sources have specific referencing requirements. Collusion is also plagiarism. This means collaborating with others without acknowledging help (be it email communications, conversations in real life or other interaction). Group coursework, if you fail to make the relationship clear, can also count. References which are incorrectly formatted. You need to be aware of, and adhere to, the citation conventions specified for your course. Plagiarism also includes using references where you have not actually read the text you reference. If you read about an author in another author’s book, you should indicate this in the citation. These are just some of the forms plagiarism can take, if in doubt seek further advice from your tutor or department. How to Avoid Plagiarism There are some simple steps you can take to avoid plagiarism. These generally involve making sure you fully cite and reference all the works and individuals you draw upon when writing. Here’s a list of useful steps: Where you use direct quotations, put these in quotation marks and reference them directly afterwards You should give the source (i.e. have a citation) for every piece of knowledge you include in your essay. Better to have too many citations than to miss out a vital one. Remember to acknowledge other forms of help you had including advice and discussions in person. You DO NOT need to cite things which are general common knowledge or knowledge considered common in the field you are writing about. As well as putting citations in the text, you also need to create a full reference list with details of all the books and articles you referenced. Sometimes last minute panics lead to plagiarism, so make sure you leave plenty of time to write and check your work. Remember that referencing and citing correctly is not only necessary to avoid plagiarism, it also helps future academics and other students by giving them an idea of current debate in your subject. Remember also that your college or university is likely to have severe penalties for plagiarism, and that it is your responsibility to make sure your work is up to standard. Role of parenting Essay Role of Parental Motivational Practices in Childrens Academic Intrinsic Motivation and Achievement (Gottfried) Article Summary I chose to write my journal article research paper on the role of parents in childrens academic motivation and achievement. The article relates the parents role and at home practices, and the effect of these practices on the childs performance and motivation. In the longitudinal study of children ages 9 and 10, two types of motivational practices were assessed: Parental motivational practices that encourage pleasure in the learning process, curiosity, persistence, and task endogeny are positively related to childrens academic intrinsic motivation and achievement. (Gottfried 105) Task-extrinsic parental motivational practices that emphasize external control, diminished autonomy, or devaluation of competence are negatively related to childrens academic intrinsic motivation and achievement. (Gottfried 105) The data observed and given in the article from mothers also provided information on which motivational practices are used, such as provision of rewards, help with schoolwork, encouragement, punishment and negativity for unsatisfactory achievement. It is important to note that although the conceptual model was derived from theory and research pertaining to parents in general, the data collected in the article were solely on mothers. The findings of the research were that the predicted variables were proven positive, and there was a high correlation between parental motivational practices and a childs academic intrinsic motivation and achievement. The studys findings also proved that mothers provisions of task-extrinsic consequences had a negative effect on childrens academic intrinsic motivation, and were directly related. The study findings also showed that there were indirect effects on subsequent motivation and achievement through their effects on earlier academic intrinsic motivation. Remarks After reading the aforementioned journal article, I can only remark upon the fact that to me, this study seemed to only validate the obvious. I am in agreement with the findings to a point. I do believe that if you make children interested and motivated in what they are doing then they will have a higher achievement rate then children who are bored with school. I believe that most parents have the knowledge of what they should and should not do to help in their childs academic performance but fail to achieve this task for many reasons. I do take into consideration, however; that although it may be detrimental to a students intrinsic motivation, in some cases to give rewards or encouragement, in other cases it is the only way some parents feel that they can achieve any form of motivation toward academic excellence in their child. After reading the article I understand that extrinsic motivation has a correlation to the lowering of intrinsic motivation in the child. I agree with the positive methods of a parents motivational practices but take into consideration the day and age of our time, in the explanation of why these practices are not followed. In our fast-paced society, most parents struggle to stay afloat and the de-structuralization of our families has had a dramatic effect upon parent and child relationships. In addition, the average child has to struggle with added emotional problems such as, single-parenting, peer pressure, and abuse or violence. Typical parents have substituted their childs intrinsic motivation, interest, and natural curiosity in exchange for higher academic grades. Most parents today cannot find the time to sit down and eat with their children let alone spend the time to teach, and guide them with simple elementary academics.
